or it could be weeks. it is a different tlesh hold than what the obama administration has laid out when you look carefully at what the president said at the general assembly, the most recent remarks on iran's nuclear program, he said the united states will not allow iran to have a nuclear bomb. i am paraphrasing to a certain degree. the word capability was not there. you did hear it from the israeli prime minister and today you're hearing it once again from mitt romney. mitt romney has been vague. he has gone back and forth on the issue of capability and sometimes he says it and sometimes he doesn't. today he is very cat goral in saying in a romney administration iran would not be able to have that capability of building a nuclear bomb which is significantly different than the threshold laid out by the president. >> and let's talk about syria which has been somewhat of a thorn in the side of this current sitting american president, and mr. romney, governor romney's view of syria, there was something in these prepared remarks that we excerpted that stood out to me and i want to get your take

against somebody who shows up with totally new proposals that says, oh, he loves teachers and last week he said obama wants to hire more teachers and i'm not for that. that suddenly he's for -- he's not for cutting taxes on the top earners in this country, on the wealthy, and, of course, his whole proposal is denying that he has a proposal that would cut taxes by $5 trillion. there's a name to that proposal. he printed it out. the analysis that was done was based on a romney proposal that now he says he doesn't know what obama is talking about. it's utterly amazing, hard to debate somebody who has totally different plans than he really has said in the past. >> does this mean the president has fulfilled his promise to get unemployment below 8% and this isn't a one-term proposition? >> you know, you can't deny the numbers. 7.8% is, in fact, lower than 8%, and that's kind of the benchmark that the republicans have laid out. i'm sure they are extremely disappointed that there are better job numbers in the united states of america because they have been trying to sabotage any efforts, every day

five weeks to go before the election, and there are certain things, mitt romney's tax plan, barack obama on social security, barack obama on simpson bowls and debt reduction, they don't want to put meat on the bone. people criticized the moderator. i'm not sure if the moderator pushed more for specifics if they decided i'm not going down this road, and they both clearly decided that on social security for obama, on tack plx plan for romney. i don't know how much cajoling will get them. barack obama being better today than he was last night, here's the problem. let's say there were 5,000 people at that rally. 50 plus million people we expect to have watched the debate last night. that's the issue. you need to be at your best when the audience is massive. you know, being good at a rally with your supporters is a lot easier than being good at a big, giant event where you're being directly confronted by the guy who wants your job. >> chris cillizza, ruth marcus and john harris, thank you all very much. >>> and how does mitt romney capitalize on his debate performance? going forward, se

of the polling we're seeing. national polls, it seems as if the dip that romney experienced last week is gone. that's the good news for you guys. the bad news is, president obama's number hasn't moved. so the bounce that he got into the 49, 50% range has held where it's governor romney's number that is fluid. are you one of those that believe that 49, 50% is the winning range? so that your next job, you're in the race, then the next job is you have to figure out how to peel votes away. >> you look at this in the context of where we are. there's five-plus weeks. there's a lot that can happen in five weeks. there's three presidential debates. and there's probably two or three hundred million ads to be dumped on the public. things change in presidential campaigns quite actively in september and early october. it's now that you start looking at serious numbers. the carter/reagan race didn't change until the last few weeks. there's a close parallel between this and carter/reagan. >> let me ask you about new hampshire's poll. i'm sure you didn't miss it. 15-point deficit for mitt romney. i'm guessi
